disaster zone, sending 24 million gallons of extra gas, a welcome sign. the obama administration is hiring trucks to bring the gas to staging areas. all this is unfolding four days before the general election. president obama and governor romney fighting it out for every last vote, especially in the key state of ohio. today the latest cnn poll shows obama with a very slight edge there, but there's everything to play for. today, the last jobs report before election day was released. unemployment ticking up to 7.9%, but at the same time, 171,000 jobs were created. no surprise, both candidates reacted differently to the news. >> today, our businesses have created nearly five and a half million new jobs. this morning we learned that companies hired more workers in october than at any time in the last eight months. >> he said he was going to lower the unemployment rate down to 5.2% right now. today, we learned that it's actually 7.9% and that's nine million jobs short of what he promised. unemployment is higher today than when barack obama took office. >> mitt romney earlier today. you'r

that has been spent in these battleground states millions and millions of dollars, negative ads against president obama but very little of it defining mitt romney positively when they knew they were going to come after him on bane. gwen: the republican primary that very thing happened. mitt romney's profile is just the wrong profile for the state of ohio. but that said, in the southeast quadrant where your appalachia, west virginia, the coal country, they have done a very aggressive job as depicting the president as having a war on coal. if they can get out the vote quite heavily and get out the vote in southeast ohio, it will make a difference. gwen: how about the independents? we were supposed to be watching for the independents and where they were going to go. do we have any sense of that. >> mitt romney has been doing better among independents in many of the polls. the question is what is the nature of the independents an how has the campaign itself caused people to identify themselves with one part or the other and not as independents anymore. so the independents that we're

million more mail ballots in 2012 compared to 2008. suggesting that the obama campaign anticipating there was going to be a reduction in early voting hours in the state of florida, have encouraged their supporters, mobilized them to vote in a different way. >> looking at iowa. it seems to be like it's going the way of 2008 so far. is that how you're reading it? >> yeah the states of iowa, north carolina, and colorado, we're seeing party registration numbers that are slightly better for the republicans than 2008. but, iowa is a state that obama won by 9.5 percentage points. so slightly better in terms of the party registration. in the early votes, probably not going to cut it for romney. he's got to do a lot better. and over the last week we've seen sort of a flattening out of the party registration. republicans had been out of th party registration. republicans had been improving. this week they've actually reversed a little bit, just slightly in terms of the party registration. so it looks as though if the romney campaign is going to turn things around they've got to do a big push

climb four days after sandy made landfall. so far the storm claimed 74 lives. more than five million homes and businesses are without power across the east coast. most of those averages are in the new york area. meantime, president obama saw the damage on the jersey shore firsthand. during the tour, the president pledged federal support for the long haul. >>> right now, local utility crews are close to restoring power to just about everybody who lost electricity during sandy. dominion virginia power has the most work ahead of it. about 3,100 of its customers still in the dark. pepco has restored power to virtually all of its customers, reporting just 13 without power. novak has restored power to all but about 380 of its customers. >> the lack of power is keeping several schools in our area closed. students from four schools will get another day off, lotion elementary, southern middle. chapel forge early childhood center in prince george's county is also without power. all schools in pendleton county are closed because of power issues. >>> there is still much to be done in the wake of
